A/C FREQUENTLY ASK QUESTIONS

Aug 13, 2021 | Air Conditioning

Our home heating and cooling systems allow us to control the temperature in our homes and businesses with little to no effort. The United States Department of Energy stated that over 75% of homes in the U.S. have air conditioners. Even though most of us use them at least 10 months out of the year, we don’t really understand how they work exactly. Presented with this information, most homeowners, at some point, will have to go keep their systems maintained, serviced, repaired, and eventually have to purchase a new HVAC system. Since 3/4ths of the country will have to go through this inevitable circumstance, our professional and knowledgeable technicians at  Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling have put together some of the common questions they get asked on a daily basis.

How Important Is It To Change My Filter?

Overall, one of the most beneficial things you can do for your HVAC system is to frequently change its filter. A lot of homeowners follow the 90-day role when changing their A/C filters. However, when deciding when to change the filter within your unit, you should account for your specific lifestyle. This includes where you live, how big your house is, and the number of residents and pets that reside within your home. When considering each of these aspects, your filter should be changed every 30 to 90 days.

How Do I Find Out Where My Filter Is Located?

Your system’s air filter can be found in one of three places:

  1. In filter case that is connected to the unit
  2. The blower box located inside of your system
  3. In air grill mounted on the wall near your unit

If you have thoroughly checked in each of these locations and can still not find the air filter for your Air Conditioner, you should contact a specialist at  Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling for assistance.

Why Is Having A Clean Air Filter Crucial For Your Home?

If you don’t want unwanted dust, dirt, or debris flowing through the air in your home, it is vital to have a clean air filter in your A/C. Your Air Conditioner works hard to clean your home’s air, and if the filter is dirty, it cannot properly clean the circulation of air in your home. Additionally, this can cause your A/C to work overtime and result in a significantly higher energy bill.

Why Is Frequent Maintenance On Your A/C Unit Necessary?

There are a few fundamental aspects that contribute to why routine maintenance is so essential when it comes to your Air Conditioner:

  • Greater Indoor Air Quality– In the Midwest, summertime can get hot, humid, and muggy. This makes it is common for mold to grow on your coils. If there is mold present in your coils, it can cause you to become sick and feel like you have the flu. During your routine maintenance, a technician will examine your coils to confirm that there are no issues.
  • Fewer Issues: At the time of your inspection, a technician will carefully inspect the inside and the outside of your system. This will verify that there are no concerns to worry about. From our HVAC expert’s perspective, it is a lot easier to repair it sooner than later.
  •  Higher Efficiency– if your unit is maintained frequently, it works with little to no issues. By consistently maintaining your unit it will help keep your air ducts free of unwanted objects and the longevity of your air filters. Thus, makes your system work effortlessly and last much longer.

If I Have To Replace One Of My Units Should I Replace Both At The Same Time?

Our experts do recommend if you have to replace one, you should definitely consider replacing both. There are a few reasons why. First, an A/C is made to work with a matching unit located inside your home. When you use two different units, they can try to surpass one another, ultimately resulting in a weak performance when your unit is using more energy than it needs to. Secondly, if you purchase them together, chances are they will have the same lifespan. Supposing you take proper care of them with annual tune-ups and check-outs. Lastly, you get a better warranty covering your whole HVAC system instead of just one or the other when you purchase them together. This type of warranty will cover your units, so you don’t end up paying full price for your repairs.

How Do I Find Out If My HVAC System Covered Under Warranty?

It is common to assume that if your HVAC system is less than five years old, it is typically still under warranty. But if you are still unsure and want to make sure it is still under warranty, you can check the outside of your unit, the bill, or any other supporting papers that came with the system. However, a typical HVAC warranty is determined by the maker of your system or the contractor who installed it.
