What To Do If Your Heat Goes Out This Winter?

Feb 18, 2022 | Air Conditioning

While winter mornings have their fair share of charm and seasonal delight, they can be bleak and unwelcoming without an adequately heated home. At Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling, we want the best for you and your family. We would hate for you to be blindsided if your heat goes out this winter. However, in this event, preparation is critical during unexpected circumstances! Though we hope this never happens to you, life is unpredictable and sometimes throws a curveball or two at us. You can be best prepared for any furnace malfunctions by knowing what questions to ask yourself if your furnace goes out in the winter.

Ask yourself these questions when troubleshooting your furnace:

1. Is the Thermostat Functioning?

First, you want to ensure the thermostat is powered on and working correctly. Check to see if it is on and responding to the different settings. If the thermostat is not responding and nothing is lighting up, try changing out the batteries for new ones.

2. Is the Heat Mode Turned on?

Make sure your thermostat is turned on to the right setting. You may think there’s no way it should’ve gotten changed in the first place, but it is always best to double-check. On your thermostat, it should say “heat mode.” This is the setting it needs to be on when using your furnace.

3. Is the Furnace Switch Turned on?

Each furnace should have a switch that turns it off and on. Generally, these power switches are located on the side of the unit. Perform a quick once over and check to confirm this switch didn’t get turned off.

4. Is the Thermostat Working on Different Settings?

Suppose you feel like the thermostat is not blowing warm air on the temperature you have it set for. In that case, it may be a good idea to test out how the thermostat responds to different temperatures and other settings. Even though the thermostat may not work on only one setting, it may work on another. Because of this, we suggest calling to have a NATE-certified technician come out to your home.

5. Is the Circuit Breaker Flipped?

If you’re still having issues up to this point, it is time to check on the circuit breaker. You never know if it blew a fuse without you realizing it. Perhaps, the answer to resolving your furnace problems may be as easy as flicking a switch back into its place.

6. Is the Pilot Light Lit?

The last thing you can check is your furnace’s pilot light. It’s possible the pilot light flame went out. This could be the reason if your furnace is still powering on but not blowing warm air. If you need to know how to relight the pilot light, most furnaces have manufacturer instructions on them.
