Why Does My Furnace Keep Blowing Fuses?

Apr 2, 2021 | Air Conditioning

Is your furnace blowing fuses, or tripping the breaker, over and over again?

If so, it is important to get to the bottom of the problem and take care of it as soon as possible.

Because your safety matters to us at Fairfield-Hamilton Heating & Cooling, we present the following information.

If your furnace fuse is blowing repeatedly, you might have a problem with:

  • Wrong Type of Fuse
First things first, make sure your furnace has the right fuses in place. If you have the wrong fuses, it could be the fuse itself causing the problem. If so, we can diagnose this problem quickly and put in the right size fuse.
  • Faulty or Worn Parts
Wear and tear is normal on an HVAC system over time. Because of this, the parts in your furnace can fail, become defective or break down from age and usage.
  • Loose Wiring
Electrical wiring can become loose from the vibrations of a normal working furnace over time. If this happens, it can short out and make the fuse blow. Because locating and repairing the loose wire can be a challenging task (and a safety hazard) contacting a reputable HVAC technician that’s fully insured, like our team members, is crucial. Keep in mind regular furnace maintenance ensures all wires are tight and secure.
  • Dirt, Dust and Debris
Over time, dirt, dust and debris can find its way from the filters into the blower motor. This can cause the motor to overheat and eventually burn out. It can also make the system blow a fuse and turn off. Cleaning or replacing your furnace filters should be a part of your regular home maintenance schedule.
  • Water Leaks
It is not unusual for there to be an occasional water leak in the furnace from an attached or nearby humidifier. If not identified and taken care of immediately, water leaks may damage the system. In this case, you’ll want to call us to keep your expensive furnace system running like it should and preventing further damage.
  • Faulty Gas Valves
If you have a gas furnace and it keeps blowing the fuse, check the safety valve. It should be able to open and close as needed. If the valve is clogged, it might kee too much heat inside the unit and force too much heat out. This can lead to overheating and potentially even a fire.
  • Malfunctioning Thermostat Wire
For electric furnaces, the thermostat wire should not touch the metal frame of the furnace. If this happens, when the wire touches the metal frame, it can send a higher voltage than the wires are able to handle. This will cause a fuse to blow. When this happens, the rest of the furnace stops functioning properly.
